Renting a car in Shillong, in plain terms
Shillong sits at about 1,500 metres, and almost every road out of it climbs, turns
or narrows at some point. That is the single biggest reason it is worth hiring a car
with a driver here rather than driving yourself. A local driver knows where the
road surface breaks up after the monsoon, which stretch fogs over by four in the
afternoon, and how long a run to Dawki really takes once you allow for photo stops.
How the fare works
For local use we quote either an hourly package or a full day package with a
kilometre limit. For outstation trips we quote per day, including fuel and the
driver's allowance. Toll, parking, permits and state entry taxes are charged at
actuals where they apply, and we will tell you which of those affect your route
before you travel. Nothing is added afterwards.
Which vehicle should you take?
Two to three people with light luggage are comfortable in a sedan. A family of five
or six with suitcases is better off in an Ertiga or an Innova Crysta, particularly
on a multi-day trip. Anything above seven people should take a Tempo Traveller, both
for the space and because keeping the group in one vehicle makes the day far easier
to coordinate. If you are not sure, call us and describe the group.
Booking ahead
During peak season, roughly October through April and again around the summer
holidays, vehicles get booked several days in advance. If your dates are fixed it is
worth calling early. For airport pickups we ask for the flight number so we can
adjust if the flight is delayed.
